“Let us not be overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21
Imagine you’re walking through a bustling city market, surrounded by vendors selling all sorts of goods and people eager to make deals. Now, picture an old man standing quietly, a peaceful smile on his face, completely unaffected by the hustle and bustle around him. This man is a shield of faith, embodying the spirit of Romans 12:21.
The verse teaches us that when we encounter evil, the most powerful response isn’t to match evil with evil but to overcome it by doing good. It’s about being proactive in our actions and attitudes, choosing to respond positively even in difficult situations. This doesn’t mean being passive or allowing evil to flourish; rather, it means using our God-given abilities to push back evil through kindness, justice, and love.
In daily life, this can look like going out of your way to help someone in need, speaking up against injustice, or simply showing kindness to someone who seems lost or troubled. For example, consider the story of Corrie ten Boom. During World War II, she and her family hid over 800 Jews in their home to protect them from the Nazis. Despite the danger, they chose to act with good, which not only saved lives but also gave hope in one of the darkest times in history.
By living out this verse, we become living proof of God’s goodness and influence in the world, creating a ripple effect of positivity wherever we go.
