This entire one verse gives us an in-depth overview of how to secure, survive and thrive at our marriage and Family life. This article holds a special meaning to me as I have experienced the fullness of this verse
We see three types of Serpents in this verse. These three types can attack a Christian marriage.

This one verse gives us an in-depth overview of how to survive, secure and thrive at our marriage and family life.
We see three types of serpents in this verse. These three types of serpents can attack a Christian marriage.
1) “Piercing Serpent – Represents Hurt
First serpent is a piercing serpent. This serpent can bring many circumstances or events which can bring hurt with “actions” and “words” caused by us or by our partner or of close immediate family member or close friends. These hurts and disappointments can pierce our hearts (hurt us).
What should we do when we get pierced?
Joh 19:34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
Blood represent forgiveness and water represents grace. These two have to flow out of us abundantly, as it did with Jesus when he was pierced. Forgiveness is “forgetting” and “moving on” and grace is “leaving a margin”. Both these attributes are absolutely essential in a marriage and help pass the first serpent trial.
There is no marraige which exists without hurt, at some point in your marriage you end up hurting your partner knowingly or unknowingly. The level of hurt can differ but rest assured there will be hurt. When two people join together they live day and night together for 30-60 years until death and hurts occurring is normal. But what is important is Forgiveness and Grace which you need.
2) “Crooked Serpent – Represents Beguile
Gen 3:13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, the serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
Any marriage goes through difficult times and times of hurt, that is attacks from the first serpent mentioned above or sometimes naturally times of trouble can occur like sicknesses and problems . This is when the second Serpent comes along. This is a crooked serpent. His ways are crooked. He has a motive to destroy the family and will use flowery words of crookedness mixed with lies and beguile the spouse.
Pro 2:14 Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked; Pro 2:15 Whose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths: Pro 2:16 To deliver thee from the strange woman (or Man), even from the stranger which flattereth with her words;
He or she who the crooked serpent will use can be a friend, a family member or a handsome of beautiful opposite sex associate to do this. Beware of this serpent. Firstly it starts off with an innocent conversation of the problems which you are facing, slowly it grows in a false concern which is shown about your problem by the talker, then there is misleading which takes place “You are really going through this? You don’t deserve this! Life is much better out of the marriage”. Through all this the serpent’s objective is to destroy the marriage, but it does it in a crooked way, never showing the real objective at all, until it is too late.
Php 2:15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
What we should we do here?
Separation!
Stay away from such people, do not run to man for comfort, run only to the feet of Jesus, when you need counsel of men look for a person with a religious backing or a person of prayer for counsel. Seek only their guidance. Don’t go to worldly people or worldly friends.
3) Dragon Serpent of the Sea – life of Turmoil
When we have failed both in above steps, the rest remains is a life of turmoil
Jas 1:6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
A defeated Christian life, a wavering bout of Faithlessness, prayerlessness, knowing the truth yet unable to seek it, knowing Jesus as a person but unable to access his peace, joy and blessing
Let us pray and hope we don’t come to this stage
These are three serpents we need to face in a marriage life and need to be aware on how to overcome them.
One universal key God gives at the beginning of the verse.

Sword represents the word of God; see the mention “Great and Strong”.
To overcome these three serpents we need an in-depth knowledge of the word of God and to be able to apply to every situation in our christian marriage life
Many young couples marry today without having these understandings in order and the evil one tries ever more hard to destroy Christian marriages.
As Christian couples there are some basics you need to follow;
1) Pray at least minimum twice a day together in one spirit holding hands 2) Go to Church as a couple without fail 3) Spare time to study the Word of God
If you cannot do any of the above ‘together’ don’t worry, you do ‘your’ and give a margin to the spouse part and Jesus will do his part.
These are the very basic preparation steps you can take to have the foundation of your marriage intact. Jesus who is mightier than the evil one will give you grace and power to overcome every trial and temptation. We have a small part to play in understanding the spiritual warfare Satan can bring to a Christian marriage and be ready with the right defenses.
