Delighting in the Law of the Lord

One of the most beautiful verses of advice is given right at the beginning of Psalms, we need to study and seek this in today’s world.

Psalms 1:1

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

Blesses is the man who ……

1) “walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly”

Your daily life is a walk, from the time you wake to the time you go to sleep, it is the walk of life!. Certain times in your day you will need to seek counsel from people. Normally we seek counsel for important things in life like changing carriers or making important decision for you or your family.

When you seek these counsels what type of person are you seeking it from?. Is it a Godly person? Make sure every decision you take, you involve a Godly person. In the olden days people consulted prophets and priests in everything. But in today’s modern world we just do things on our own liking and when things go wrong we seek servants of God.

Sometimes you may not be able to seek the advice of a Godly person, in which case we need to consult God directly through prayer and the Holy Spirit will guide you.

2) “standeth in the way of sinners”

This has a deep meaning, we were worldly sinners once, so we know. This verse means that you are now saved and not a sinner, but you are crossing a sinners path somewhere.

A sinner has a way, a dark walk of life, sort of a schedule. He plans for sin.

The person will get up in the morning and plan the way or manner to spend the day in sin. As a example the person may think that I have to leave early from office to fornicate, accuse falsely someone and indulge in alcohol till night with the ungodly.

What this verse means is that you will not plan your day like this, but you will be crossing the sinners path at some point in some sinful activity.

Examine your life and see where these paths cross. As a example a sinful man always lives in fear and may want to watch the news at particular time in order to get an idea of the violence etc so that he can try to go out for his activities in peace of mind. If you are also watching the news and coming home timing yourself with the intention of safe guarding yourself because of fear, this is a sin. Since you are also committing the same sin, you are crossing his path at this point. We used a mild example but you can examine your lives.

By the way you might wonder, is watching news a sin?. It is mentioned in the word of God anything done without faith is sin. So it depends with what intentions you are watching the news and to what level you are addicted. Your faith determines whether it is a sin or not, as the bible mentions your own thoughts will convict or release you.

3) “sitteth in the seat of the scornful”

These are a set of people who do not actively engage in any useful thing (hence sitteth) and think high of themselves (seat of importance) and scorn at others. Find mistakes and think of others as un worthy. The Psalmist has put the worst at the last. Self righteousness can fall into this category, so lets be very careful and examine our lives and humbly ask Jesus to correct us.

“But”!!

This is a big “But” mentioned here, it is not only sufficient to follow all above 3 but we need to do something else.

“But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.”

The start and the end of this verse is the most important teaching, “delight” and “day and night” both these two qualities you cannot author yourself. Only Jesus can create these to qualities in you. You can read on your own but you will not be able to delight. You can meditate on your own sometimes but not day and night.

When you earnestly ask God to help you he will Author and perfect these two qualities in you.

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

We don’t like to explain much on rewards, as God is not a person to lies and he will bring about the rewards in you. Rewards WILL come to you and there is not much teaching to do about the rewards coming to you. You can sit back and enjoy the rewards.

Lets just look at one point ‘in his season’. So when you seek with your heart and follow above, God will bring about the rewards “in his season”, So never give up, he will will will will will bring about the rewards.

God Bless you.
